Parent’s Corner- “For the Kids!” Series

Parent’s Corner began as a communication tool to inform parents what had been taught in Children’s Sunday school classes on a given Sunday morning, providing passages to read together and discussion questions to facilitate conversation between parents and their children during the week.  While our Sunday school classes are paused, I will be changing the focus of Parent’s Corner from curriculum notes, to teachable moments.  

 “For the Kids!” 

This collection of topical journal entries will focus on teachable moments that parents can have with their kids.  They will be grounded in Scripture, seasoned by stories and experiences, and distributed with love and prayers for many sweet times together as a family.  In an effort to be organized and purposeful, I’ll be choosing topics by going through the alphabet.  As I write this, please know that I don’t claim to have all of the answers.  Not at all!  What I do have is a genuine desire to have a teachable spirit, and a heart for the precious kiddos in our body.  

“S” is for Simplicity

“But godliness with contentment is great gain, for we brought nothing into the world, and we cannot take anything out of the world.” 1Timothy 6:6-7

“He has told you, O man, what is good; and what does the Lord require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?” Micah 6:8

This morning, I read Luke 24. Take a few minutes to read that chapter as a family.  This is the chapter after the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus where Jesus appears to the disciples on the road to Emmaus.  There they were, on the road, going from one place to another.  The Bible says that they were talking about the events that had just happened.  They were going about their day, walking with a friend, talking about their lives, and Jesus appeared to them.  This was the perfect time and the perfect place as ordained by God, but truly, they weren’t doing anything special.  There were probably other places that Jesus could have appeared, and other people who could have seen Him that might have gained even more attention,  but He chose this time and this palace.  It wasn’t fancy.  It wasn’t flashy, but it was the way God wanted to do it.

Kids, have you ever wondered how God might use you?  Have you ever thought that your life isn’t “special” enough for the Lord to work with?  Does it seem simple?  Typical?  Nothing special to speak of?  Guess what?  You have the life that the Lord has given you, and that is exactly as it should be!

Instead of being dissatisfied, we should practice contentment.  (see 1 Timothy 6:6-7 above).This is the life the Lord has given us.  How can we glorify Him in it?  Micah 6:8 gives some great instructions. . . do justice, love mercy, and walk humbly with your God.  It may be, as you are walking along, that the Lord will choose that moment to work in your life.  Are you ready?  : )
