Blessing Others

“Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.” Isaiah 41:10 ESV

In our elementary classes, we have been studying the book of Acts.  This book is brimming with stories and details of God’s provision for those who faced persecution and challenges.  Paul, in particular, took great joy in the sufferings he was experiencing, because he also saw the Gospel being proclaimed and spread in the midst of his suffering.  In our lesson this week, we are reminded that God freed Peter from prison, and was with him in all of his suffering.  We are not promised that God will deliver us or protect us from all suffering, but we know that He will always be with us, and we can have the promise of eternity with Him.  What a wonderful truth to share with others!

While we are here in our present circumstances, waiting for an end to our current trial, how can we bless others and share the love of Jesus with them?  I’ve included some ideas from the 2s curriculum.  This would be a great thing for ALL of us to do . . . sharing God’s good gifts with others is always a great idea!  I’d love to hear about the creative ideas you design!

This week’s lessons. . .

2s/3s- Mary Anoints Jesus

Scripture- John 12:1-8

Lesson Truth- Jesus is happy when we give.

Aims for the Children- to do at least one of the following during the lesson:

1.     Tell what Mary gave to Jesus

2.     Tell how Jesus liked the gift

3.     Make a gift and give it to someone

“In previous lessons, children have learned that Jesus takes care of them, loves them, and will bless them in any and all life circumstances.  This lesson teaches that they should love Jesus in return and show that love by the gifts of thanks to the Lord.  Mary serves as a model.  Full of grateful love, she made an unusual gesture of thanks to the Lord Jesus.”

Activity ideas-

“To introduce the idea of giving, wrap a small gift for each “student” in your class.  As you are giving them out, say this poem: Jesus says it’s good to give, I know it must be true.  ‘Cause when I give, I’m happy, and my friend is happy too!  As they are enjoying their gifts, explain that it makes you happy to give them gifts to see them happy.  Explain that Jesus is happy when he sees his people love each other and give gifts to each other.” (taken from the Beginnings curriculum binder, p 235.)

You can also explain that giving gifts can take many forms.  You can give a present.  You can say a kind word.  You can perform an act of service.  With your children, determine how you as a family can give a gift to someone outside of your family this week.  Brainstorm be creative and be sure to tell the recipient that you love giving because Jesus has given so much to you!  You could also give gifts within your family.  Put your names in a bowl, choose one, and bless that person sometime this week, showing them the love you have for them!

4s-5th- God Frees Peter from Prison

Scripture- Acts 12:1-24

Principle- The sovereign God blesses His servants but punishes His enemies.

Ask Your Child- Why did God punish Herod?

Apply- By believing that God works through prayer.

This Week- As a family, read Acts 12:1-24

Next Week- Acts 15:1-35
