L is for Listening

Parent’s Corner- “For the Kids!” Series

Parent’s Corner began as a communication tool to inform parents what had been taught in Children’s Sunday school classes on a given Sunday morning, providing passages to read together and discussion questions to facilitate conversation between parents and their children during the week.  We have just finished Year 3 of our curriculum series.  The decision has been made to press “pause” in our Children’s ministry classes before beginning again with Year 1.  While we are paused, I will be changing the focus of Parent’s Corner from curriculum notes, to teachable moments. 

 “For the Kids!”

This collection of topical journal entries will focus on teachable moments that parents can have with their kids.  They will be grounded in Scripture, seasoned by stories and experiences, and distributed with love and prayers for many sweet times together as a family.  In an effort to be organized and purposeful, I’ll be choosing topics by going through the alphabet.  As I write this, please know that I don’t claim to have all of the answers.  Not at all!  What I do have is a genuine desire to have a teachable spirit, and a heart for the precious kiddos in our body. 

L is for Listening

“All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness.”  2 Timothy 3:16

“My dear brothers, take note of this: everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry.”  James 1:19

Who do you listen to in a day?

I’m sure you listen to your family members as they talk to you, talk to others on their zoom calls, and perhaps even talk under their breath in frustration!

I’m sure you “listen” to a variety social media posts as you go about your day.

I’m sure you even listen to the voice inside your own head as you are making choices and decisions.

Who do you listen to most. . .  because that is the one who is going to have the biggest influence on your life.  Family members could be good candidates for this role.  They love you, they have your overall best interest at heart, and they have a vested interest in you.  Various contacts on social media might be able to speak to a specific topic, but do they really know you? 

Sunday school question of the day. . . who knows you the best, who created you just as you are, and who wants the very BEST for you?

Yes!  You guessed it!  God! 

You should listen to God and His truth above all else. 

How do you do this? 

You read your Bible.  You ask questions of trusted sources when you don’t understand something, and you pray that God would give you the wisdom you need to do His will in your life.  

Is this easy?  Not always.  Is it important?  Absolutely.  Is it worth it?  Most definitely.
