Parent’s Corner- “For the Kids!” Series
Parent’s Corner began as a communication tool to inform parents what had been taught in Children’s Sunday school classes on a given Sunday morning, providing passages to read together and discussion questions to facilitate conversation between parents and their children during the week. We have just finished Year 3 of our curriculum series. The decision has been made to press “pause” in our Children’s ministry classes before beginning again with Year 1. While we are paused, I will be changing the focus of Parent’s Corner from curriculum notes, to teachable moments.
“For the Kids!”
This collection of topical journal entries will focus on teachable moments that parents can have with their kids. They will be grounded in Scripture, seasoned by stories and experiences, and distributed with love and prayers for many sweet times together as a family. In an effort to be organized and purposeful, I’ll be choosing topics by going through the alphabet. As I write this, please know that I don’t claim to have all of the answers. Not at all! What I do have is a genuine desire to have a teachable spirit, and a heart for the precious kiddos in our body.
K is for Knowledge
“The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom, and knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.” Proverbs 9:10
“If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him.” James 1:5
What do you know a lot about? If you had to list three things, what would they be?
Do you know a lot about superheroes?
Do you know a lot about a game or sport?
Do you know a lot about your best friend?
How did you learn so much? My guess is that you spent time thinking about it, practicing and studying it, talking about it to other people, and maybe even dreaming about it! When you first started learning about it, did you know everything you do now? NO! I bet you didn’t! It took time, didn’t it? Did you have to ask for help at the beginning? My guess it you probably did.
If you want to learn about the Bible, you need to put the same elements into practice. You need to practice! My favorite teacher once said that practice didn’t make perfect, practice made permanent. If you want your knowledge of the Bible to be permanent, you need to practice!
What does it mean to practice your knowledge of the Bible? It’s the same as anything else. . . one step at a time. Can you read the whole Bible in one sitting? Probably not. But can you read a little bit every day? I don’t see why not! That is a great goal to have!
Here is where asking for help is a great idea. Don’t know where to start? Ask your mom or dad if they have a suggestion. Even better, ask them if they would like to read it with you! (Insider info. . . fewer things will make your parents happier than teaching you to love the Lord like they do!).
Make a plan. . . Where are you going to start? Decide on that this week and get going!
